MIAMI, Fla. - Daytona State College turned away Miami Dade College, 1-0, on Saturday to win the FCSAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship.
The Falcons ran their winning streak to 29 matches - all but one coming in full time - while winning a second straight FCSAA Championship.
After a scoreless first half by both teams, Daytona State finally broke through when Susu Roberts pushed one past Miami Dade goalie Ashley Fonseca in the 71st minute.
The host Sharks, who were riding the momentum of a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over Eastern Florida State College in the semifinal round, kept the Falcons' explosive offense at bay, limiting Daytona State to only five shots on goal and ten shots total.
But just when sudden death overtime was looking more and more like a possibility, a Miami Dade turnover created an opportunity for Daytona State. A beautiful pass by Vanessa Manoil found Roberts, who beat Fonseca to the ball and scored the game's only goal.
Roberts, who also scored in the Falcons' 5-0 win over Polk State College in the semifinals, was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Falcon goalie Julianna Trujillo did the rest. She turned away all four shots on goal and 11 total en route to a second shutout this postseason.
Daytona State's Hope Clark was named the FCSAA Coach of the Year.
With the win, Daytona State will move on to the Southeast District Championship in Lancaster, S.C. The Falcons will play USC Sumter on Friday, October 31 in the semifinals.
