FORT MYERS, Fla. - Ahead of Friday's start to the FCSAA DI Volleyball Championship in Fort Myers, the Citrus Conference and All-FCSAA awards were handed out Thursday night at the tournament banquet.
Citrus Conference Champions Miami Dade swept the superlative awards with sophomore Luyeisy Marquez Moreno earning Player of the Year honors, Eduarda Fabricio picking up Freshman of the Year accolades, and long time Sharks Head Coach Kiko Benoit being named the conference's Coach of the Year.
Marquez Moreno ranked in the top three in the conference in kills per set (4.05) and hitting percentage by a pin (.296) in Citrus Conference play while being the only player in the league to average over 3.00 kills and 3.00 digs per set on the season. Fabricio far and away led the Citrus Conference in hitting percentage in conference play at .504, 135 points ahead of the next closest hitter. She also came up big defensively for the Sharks, ranking second in the league in blocks per set with 1.23. Joining the duo on the First-team All-Citrus Conference and All-FCSAA squads were teammates Eleonora Gicheva and Katianna Mejia Betancur. Gicheva finished third in the conference in assists per set at 8.78 and led all setters with 2.80 digs per set while also leading the conference in aces per set with 0.83. Betancur was the state leader in digs per set with 4.68 and had just five total reception errors during conference play.
Florida SouthWestern had three players named to the All-FCSAA and First-team All-Conference teams. Setter Irina Makinen dished out nearly 100 more assists than any other player in Citrus Conference play this season, averaging 10.93 per set while also finishing second in aces per set with 0.66 per set. Sara Gamboa was third in the conference in kills per set with 3.76 and had the top hitting percentage of any outside in the league during conference play at .316. Aleksandra Lucic ranked in the top 10 in the conference in three different categories during conference play, hitting .366 with 0.98 blocks and 0.47 aces per set for FSW.
Hillsborough and Eastern Florida each had two First-team selections. The Hawks Pamela De Jesus Tejedor led all Citrus Conference hitters with 4.10 kills per set in conference play while being one of just two players in the league to average 3.00 or more kills and 2.00 or more digs per set in league action. Joining her was Hillsborough setter Eva Rovello who finished second in the league with 8.93 assists per set while also leading all FCSAA setters with 0.68 blocks per set. A pair of middles represented Eastern Florida on the First-team. Diara Gaye ranked in the top 13 in kills per set with 1.91 and blocks per set with 0.70 while Emma Cook was right on her heels with 1.77 kills and 0.68 blocks per set.
Daytona's Charizma Lofton rounded out the First-team after finishing fifth in conference play with 2.88 kills per set for the Falcons.
FSW had four players named to the Second-team All-Conference squad, giving them a league best seven overall. In that group was Giovanna Rocha and Magi Milicevic who both pick up Second-team nods for the second straight season.
Three Daytona State Falcons were named Second-team All-Conference selections while two players from Miami Dade, and one each from Hillsborough, Eastern Florida, and Polk rounded out the picks.
Kiko Benoit added to his trophy case by winning Citrus Conference Coach of the Year honors after leading Miami Dade to their first Citrus Conference title in program history.
All 24 players will be in action at this weekend's FCSAA DI Volleyball Championship in Fort Myers with play starting Friday at 10 a.m. in the tournament quarterfinals at Suncoast Credit Union Arena.
