PALATKA, Fla. - St. Johns River State College earned a return trip to the NJCAA Division II Softball World Series on Friday, sweeping a doubleheader from Central Alabama Community College to win the NJCAA DII South District Championship.
The Vikings won game one, 8-6, then took a wild game two, 14-10, in nine innings.
In the opener, St. Johns River State staked starter and winning pitcher Alyssa Vallad with a 4-0 lead after one inning and that was enough.
The Vikings eventually led 8-2 through four before the Trojans plated two runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.
Vallad went the distance in the circle, offsetting four hits and seven walks allowed with 11 strikeouts. At the plate, she was 3-for-4 with a double.
Jenelle Cruz also went 3-for-4, homered and drove in three runs.
In game two, Central Alabama, who was designated as the home team, took a 3-2 lead to the fifth when things got interesting.
The Vikings scored seven runs in their next three at-bats and carried a 9-4 lead to the bottom of the seventh, needing just three outs. Central Alabama, however, had other idea.
A five-run seventh, including a game-tying grand slam sent the game to extra innings.
The teams exchanged runs in the eighth then St. Johns River State plated four in the ninth.
The Vikings unleashed a 22-hit attack, including five home runs, with six different players recording at least two hits.
Caylee Elder, also the winning pitcher, went 5-for-6 (HR) with three RBI.
Cruz was 4-for-6. Princess Arredondo was 4-for-5 (HR) with four runs scored. Vallad went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two home runs.
