TAMPA, Fla. - Start spreading the news.

As Frank Sinatra's timeless classic, "New York, New York," echoed throughout Steinbrenner Field, that's exactly what the Miami Dade College Sharks were doing after an exhillarating 5-1 win over Chipola College to claim the FCSAA DI Baseball Championship and a berth in the NJCAA DI World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

Miami Dade was forced to Monday's winner-take-all finale when Chipola walked-off the Sharks, 4-3, on Sunday evening. It also served as the rubber match of what proved to be a best-of-3 series between the two powers. Miami Dade beat Chipola, 11-4, in Saturday's winner's bracket final to advance to the Championship Game.

Chipola made its way to the final with an 8-1 win over State College of Florida in Sunday's first game.

The final chapter in the Chipola-Miami Dade trilogy delivered what you'd expect in a championship game.

The Sharks drew first blood with a second-inning run, courtesy of Leamsi Montanez' RBI-ground out to second. Chipola plated the equalizer an inning later when Kane Moye drew a bases-loaded walk.

Miami Dade regained the lead in the fifth when a Chipola error resulted in an unearned run and a 2-1 lead for the Sharks.

The game reached a fever pitch in the seventh.

With the outcome still very much in doubt, Miami Dade put two runners on but with two outs for Miguel Colmenares, who faced a 2-2 count against Chipola reliever Drew Colon. Colmenares took the next pitch over the left field wall for a three-run homer to give Miami Dade breathing room and a 5-1 lead.

Luke Helms recorded the final six outs for the save, preserving the win for Xavier Pelzer, who scattered six hits over six innings.

Pelzer received the Robert Perky Memorial Award, presented to the Tournament's Most Outstanding Pitcher while Colmenares, who went 2-for-3 and scored twice, received the Bob Zelinski Memoria Award, presented to the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Miami Dade's Laz Llanes received the FCSAA Coach of the Year Award.
