LEESBURG, Fla. – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) head softball coach Jay Miller has announced that this will be his final year ahead of the 2026 season. This news follows Miller's announcement in mid-2025 of being appointed the Executive Director of Athletics.
After a decade of coaching the Lakehawks, Miller has transformed the team into a nationally recognized program achieving a 279-271 record for a .507 winning percentage.
From finishing with a 13-46 record in his first season in 2016, Miller achieved the program's first 30-win season in 2018 and the program's first 40-win season in 2023 along with a program-first FCSAA title.
In ten seasons, Miller has had one NJCAA All-American, one NFCA Gold Glove recipient, two FCSAA Players of the Year, seven NJCAA All-Academic Team awards, and 30+ NJCAA All-Academic honorees as well as helping over 40 student-athletes continue playing softball at four-year institutions.
Miller has expressed his gratitude to his current team, all of the athletes that have come through the softball program, his colleagues, the athletic department, and the College.
"I cannot thank my players and assistant coaches enough for what they have turned this program into over the last decade. The goal should always be: wherever you go, leave it better than how you found it, and I believe they did that."
"Coaching softball at Lake-Sumter has been the most fun I think I will ever have in my career in college athletics, but after 11 years, it is time to turn my attention toward the future and some of the most important and impactful things I can help the athletics community achieve," shared Miller.
Coach Miller and the Lakehawks are approaching two weeks until the first pitch of the 2026 season.
Following this announcement, LSSC Athletics will begin a nationwide search immediately for a head softball coach to begin in 2026-27.
